January Preview

Hello readers. Sorry there haven’t been many posts recently, M. Deanpool got sick and took a couple days off. He’s going to need the rest with how busy this month will likely be! Here’s a little preview for what’s to come this month from the Comic-Cave.

With the new year, Marvel will be debuting many new on-going series: All-New Invaders, Avengers World, All-New X-Factor, Black Widow, Miracleman, Inhumans and a couple others. After a so-so year from Marvel Comics and many DC Comics’ series having great success, Marvel is looking to bounce back with fresh stories, new writing, and good-looking artwork. Not sure which ones Deanpool will be picking up, but you can expect some extended reviews for a lot of these #1 issues.

Same ol’ stuff for DC comics though, but Deanpool is especially excited for the mega-anniversary issue of Detective Comics #27 (in honor of Batman’s first appearance) coming out this month. But we’ll also follow up with Deanpool’s favorite DC superhero The Flash, which is under a new creative team, and be eager to see what will happen next in Justice League 3000.

Also, I talked Mr. Deanpool into trying out some new stories from other publishers so I can write about some new stories. Safe to assume Weekly Pick-Ups will be loaded with content this month.

Along with the on-going Weekly Pick Ups and Character Spotlights, Deanpool is going to dedicate this month to one of his favorite sidekick characters: Robin. Each Tuesday of this month will feature a review of one of the four Robins: Dick Grayson. Jason Todd. Time Drake. Damian Wayne. Specifically, Deanpool will review each character’s first issue in the New 52 and explain how the character has changed since the relaunch.

Honorable Mention:
Stephanie Brown. Okay there’s technically five Robins. And Stephanie Brown (aka Spoiler before her time as Robin) was the immediate one after Tim Drake (Fun Fact: she was Tim’s girlfriend). She volunteered as Robin after Tim Drake’s resignation but was essentially fired by Batman for not following his exact orders (she started a giant gang war in Gotham y’all). Also there was some issues with her death, but then she turned out to be alive and faked her death after the gang war to protect herself. She also had a small run as Batgirl pre-New 52. Her role in the New 52? Deanpool doesn’t want to "spoil" anything but there is some intel that the Spoiler will be making a comeback sometime in this new year (#BatmanEternal).
Carrie Kelley. Okay there's one more Robin. Those who have watched and/or read the non-canonical The Dark Knight Returns know this thirteen year old girl becomes Robin after saving an aged Batman. Not an orphan though, she broke that streak, but her parents were quite neglectful.
Harper Row. Okay, she's not a Robin... yet??? This is just Deanpool speculating, but this mysterious Harper Row character that has popped up at least twice (or thrice now) as a character doing whatever she can to help Batman. She saved Batman's life at the end of the Court of Owls story arc by jump starting his heart with jumper cables and a car battery. She seems to be a good fit for perhaps a new Robin? Batgirl? Oracle? Did we mention she lives alone with her brother? Not technically an orphan but still… like we said, all speculation. She got a whole issue to herself in the Batman series. And she just so happens to appear in Batman #18 when the role of Robin just so happened to become vacant. If not Robin, she still looks to be an interesting character to watch in the Batman world.
No these Robins were not neglected because they’re female, but because Stephanie’s run was short-lived and Carrie’s story is out of normal story canons, or in an "alternate future." But they deserved to be mentioned for serving their respectful roles as Batman’s Robin.

Robins. #1 issues. Batman Anniversary. Plenty to look forward to, so check back often this month!

  1. I preordered the first issues of All-New Invaders, Avengers World, All-New X-Factor and Miracleman. And Detective Comics #27 too (I'm very excited about Brad Meltzer's story).
